Bellevue Auto Accident Attorney | WSP On the Lookout for Distracted Drivers
AppId is over the quota
As a Seattle distracted driving accident attorney, and founder of Teens Against Distracted Driving (T.A.D.D.), I know that distracted driving is a very dangerous force on our streets and highways here in Washington State. The Washington State Patrol issued a media release yesterday to the effect that State Troopers will be keeping an eye out for illegal cell phone users. The Washington State Patrol has been making a concerted effort in recent weeks and months to let people know the dangers of distracted driving, as well as to make our roads safer by stopping and citing people who they observe using their cell phones while driving. The State Patrol encourages drivers not to use their cell phones while driving, but if for some reason they MUST use their phone, to use a hands-free device. I would urge drivers who need to use their phones to pull into a parking lot or some other safe area first. IF you are on the highway, get off the highway and find a safe place to park. The shoulder of the highway is for emergencies only; it is not a safe place to use your cell phone.
The US Department of Transportation reports that in 2009, 20% of injury crashes involved drivers who were distracted in some way. 995 traffic fatalities that year resulted from drivers using cell phones. They also report that a driver using a cell phone is four times as likely to be involved in a serious injury crash. To relate how this issue relates to our local drivers here in Washington, King County Troopers pulled over 370 drivers for talking on cell phones in September. 43 drivers were pulled over for texting while driving. More than half of those drivers were issued a $124 citation for illegal cell phone use.
