Courtesy of The Record HeraldAn early morning crash in Washington Township on September 17th left two teenagers dead and one critically injured from the accident. It was 5 o’clock in the morning when the teens’ vehicle lost control around a curve and hit a mailbox followed by a utility pole and finally a tree. Bystanders were able to remove the injured passengers from the vehicle before it burst into flames. Kyle Downin, 18, of Waynesboro was pronounced dead at Waynesboro Hospital due to injuries sustained from the car accident. Zachary Downin, 17, was airlifted to York Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries, but died around 9 p.m. the same day. Another passenger, Zachary Binnix, 18, was taken to Meritus Medical Center and then later transferred to University of Maryland Trauma Center, listed in critical condition.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of Kyle and Zachary Downin during this extremely difficult and tragic time. We hope that Zachary Binnix is able to experience a complete recovery from his injuries from the tragic Washington Township car accident.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three deaths in this age group.” The same report also states that “In 2009, about 3,000 teens in the United States aged 15–19 were killed and more than 350,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes.” With such a large statistic looming, we need to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of young drivers and their passengers like raising awareness and education.
