Louisiana residents mental health may be at risk of oil spill

July 9, 2010 There are many factors that health authorities be examined Louisiana when it will have the health effects of the recent deepwater horizon oil spill on people. Air quality and skin contamination are the obvious effects understood, but now the mental health of the residents on the Gulf Coast is always cause for concern.

A $ 10 million funding request has been brought to help for the State of Louisiana's "Louisiana spirit" outreach teams, a division of the Louisiana Department of health and hospitals - Office of mental health provide. The program was implemented after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 against the mental health consequences of the disaster.

Now as the State of Louisiana faces still a further disaster, officials fear that an increase of stress, fear, domestic violence, substance abuse, depression and suicide a result may be. Doctors in the Louisiana spirit program are optimistic that BP is their need for honor and the means to protect of the citizens of Louisiana from the psychological effects that may be required to provide the spill.

Similar as in other traumatic events that lead to future mental health problems we can, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can see more cases of mental afflictions 10 or 20 years on the way of current Gulf Coast residents.
