The frequency of the wrong site surgery errors
A recent article in Reuters Health published results from studies at the University of Colorado on the frequency of surgical disorders is carried out. It is quite frightening to report that wrong site surgery accounted for 107 cases of the 27,000 studied. Is still frightening, the 25 cases were on the wrong patient (and I would argue cases wrong site surgery, to).
Estimates are that some sort of mistake. 1 in each 75,000 US operations leads although this may sound not how much the fact that these errors are easily avoidable it makes a great case for some serious health care review. I have even the patients their surgical site marking tells peace of mind to have the operation in the correct area is carried out.
The main contribution to the wrong site surgery errors is communication problems. Misread charts, errors in judgment and protocol submitted to an elevated add chance that a surgical procedure will be carried out on the wrong side of the body. Apparently it is quite simply on the wrong lung, work, because hey, 2 of them!
One of the main culprits found was surgical team who failed in the study, lead the short briefing sessions, known as timeouts, before and during a procedure. The timeouts are a moment for the team, which examine details of the operation, the operation that proper procedure is performed and the surgical site is correctly identified to ensure that the right patient.
If these protocols, security will be followed, the chances of a wrong site surgery be reduced drastically. There are no extra equipment or staff, and the briefings only take a few minutes - so there is no excuse to perform not these timeouts if they help save lives.
