The State has taken the number of cyclists throughout California each year continues to increase, consistent incremental steps to improve bike safety on streets and highways. This week proponents of bicycle safety celebrated an important milestone for a law, the driver to three feet allow passing cyclists in most cases would require a key issue for the Bicycle Coalition of California. Despite spirited opposition has the California Assembly Transportation Committee the Bill by votes of 5, send to the Assembly appropriations.

Nineteen States nationwide have passed similar three foot laws adopted, and the California Department of motor vehicles has proposed three feet as safe passing distance for drivers. Still, the law faced serious opposition from union lobbyists and truck driver advocates, who say the law could confuse drivers and even cause additional motorcycle accidents. However, could the opposition repeatedly 8 members of the Committee to sway. "During the fight against this law tried to obfuscate and confuse the Committee members was looking through this list and act to do the right thing," said the bill sponsor, Senator Alan Lowenthal. "This simple measure will offer security clarity for driver for cyclists and at the same time providing." "This Bill is a win-win situation for all."

California law currently States that allow motorists "safe distance" should be when passing cyclists, but does not specify if that means 6 or three feet. But for anyone who has ridden a bicycle to California streets and highways, it is clear that routinely not enough room can drive vehicles leave the disorientation, instability or even a dangerous motorcycle accident. The three foot law disclosure makes it clear this question on a relatively small inconvenience to individual drivers.

When the Bill comes, it will no doubt make cyclists on California streets and highways feel safe. But just in case, cyclists to obey all traffic laws and take the appropriate safety equipment when zooming should be pursued by the State on their bikes. But above all enjoy great bike weather this summer!
