With Halloween rapidly approaching, the challenging task of finding the perfect costume looms overhead.  People pick their Halloween costumes for different reasons; some want to be pretty, some want to be scary, some want to be a celebrity, and some just throw a costume together at the last minute.  Last year, the most prevalent Halloween costumes were based on pop culture.  The most widely worn Halloween costumes from 2010 came from the movies, events, and music that were popular that year.

Lady Gaga:  Outfits mimicking the uber-famous pop singer, Lady Gaga, were one of the top Halloween costumes seen last year.  Adults and kids alike spent Halloween 2010 paying homage to Lady Gaga’s unique style sporting wigs, accessories, and outfits inspired by the recording artist.Snooki:  Dressing up as a member of MTV’s smash-hit reality show The Jersey Shore was a popular trend for Halloween 2010.  One of the most popular cast mates, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, was an obvious choice for many women (and even some men!) last year.  Combining a high poof, a leopard print dress, and a fake tan, Snooki was found everywhere last Halloween. The Situation:  Another popular cast member of The Jersey Shore, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, was all the rage last Halloween.  As it is one of his more prominent features, a Situation costume was not complete without his six-pack abs, paired with Guido-chic clothing.  Most people used fake abs or drew them on their stomach to create the illusion of a muscled stomach.Vampires:  Thanks to phenomenon such as the Twilight series, True Blood, and The Vampire Diaries, fangs were a huge trend in costumes last year.  Whether people were dressing as their favorite fictional vampire, or just adding fangs and blood, vampires were one of the most popular costume choices in 2010.Mad Hatter:  With Johnny Depp playing the Mad Hatter in the 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland, many trick-or-treaters chose to wear the costume last October.  An oversized hat, an unruly red wig, a big bowtie, and a peculiar suit were the ingredients necessary for a Mad Hatter costume.Alice in Wonderland:  Many girls revisited the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland with the release of the 2010 film for their Halloween costume dressing up as the main character, Alice.  To complete this costume, girls wore black Mary Janes, white stockings, and a short-sleeved blue dress with a white apron.Michael Jackson:  Following the passing of one of the world’s most famous pop stars, many people paid tribute by dressing up as Michael Jackson for Halloween last year.  There were many Michael Jackson looks to choose from, as he was an entertainer for many years.  His most notable looks were from his music videos “Thriller”, “Bad”, and “Man in the Mirror.”Princess:  Every little girl wants to be a princess, and Halloween is an occasion to realize that dream, even if it’s only for one night.  Last year, young girls dressed up either as Disney princesses or just wore a pretty dress and a tiara.  The Princess costume is one of the most popular costumes for little girls, a trend which remained true for Halloween 2010.Witch:  The witch costume is one of the most popular choices among both adults and children every Halloween, and last year was no different.  Different versions of witch costumes were seen, some including accessories like: a pointy hat, a broomstick, a wand, a cauldron, etc.Pumpkin (for dogs):  Some owners like to share Halloween with their dogs, and last year most canines who participated in Halloween were dressed as pumpkins.  In addition to making the costume at home, dog lovers were able to purchase pumpkin costumes for their pups which were available in all different sizes.

During the hunt for that perfect costume, look no further than popular culture events of that year.  Observing the obvious trend of dressing up like a character from a popular TV show or movie, a reality star, or musician for Halloween, we can expect a few things this October.  You’re likely to see Captain Americas, Green Hornets, Katy Perrys, and other figures from entertainment roaming the streets this Halloween.  Whatever costume you choose, remember to have fun and be safe on the spookiest night of the year.
