Comair Incorporated has reached the first two settlements in the August 27th crash of a Comair regional jet at Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport.

Comair Incorporated has reached the first two settlements in the August 27th crash of a Comair regional jet at Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport.

Comair released documents that it filed Friday in U.S. District Court, which include a letter informing the court it has settled claims from the estates of Priscilla Johnson, 44, of Lexington, and Mary Jane Silas, 58, of Columbus, Miss.

Parties in those cases are still finalizing terms of the agreement and “have agreed to keep details of the settlement confidential at this time,” the letter said.

Johnson and Silas were two of the 49 people on Comair Flight 5191 who died in the crash that occurred after the plane attempted to take off from the wrong runway. The plane tried to take off from a 3,500-foot runway used by small planes, although it was supposed to use a runway twice as long.

“The terms of the settlement are confidential, but I can tell you that the agreements provide fair compensation to the families for their loss,” Comair spokesperson Kate Marx said.

Marx said that 29 lawsuits have been filed so far on behalf of 38 passengers. The letter shows that the estate of Silas settled before it filed suit against Comair.

“We are fulfilling our commitment to ensure the settlements are prompt and fair to the families of this tragic accident,” Marx said. “We also remain committed to doing what is reasonable for each of the passenger families, and we have every motivation to continue to pursue fair compensation for victims.”

Update: Link Between Autism and SSRI Antidepressants Requires Further Research

Posted on Monday, October 24th, 2011

Lawsuits against manufacturers of anti-depressants have been filed in all 50 states following a study that found children whose mothers took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Paxil and Zoloft during pregnancy were twice as likely to have a diagnosis of autism or a related disorder.

However, the jury is still out on whether the medical evidence points to causation, meaning the drugs directly increase the likelihood of autism, or correlation, which would mean women who exhibit symptoms of depression, and are therefore prescribed SSRIs, are more likely to give birth to children with a disorder on the autism spectrum. Said one of the landmark study’s authors, Dr. Lisa Croen, “we can’t detect causality from one study.”

What we know is that SSRIs affect the level of serotonin in the brain, and abnormal levels of serotonin are an important symptom of children with autism.

While it is not entirely conclusive, the Kaiser Permanente study is just one of many that have pursued a link between pregnant women taking SSRIs and various birth defects. The authors of this particular study were interested in SSRIs and autism because of the role that serotonin appears to play in the disorder. The fact that children whose mothers took SSRIs during the first trimester of pregnancy were four times more likely to develop a disorder on the autism spectrum is consistent with the theory that taking SSRI’s while pregnant is responsible for higher autism rates.

Still, a variety of environmental factors, including the mother’s own natural serotonin levels, are believed by many to be the primary factor in the development of autism in children.

Even though not all the evidence is concrete, many lawsuits have been filed over the years alleging drug companies failed to warn doctors about the risks SSRIs pose to pregnant women and their children. GJEL has fielded and continues to field such suits for California residents whose pregnancies have been negatively impacted by taking SSRIs.

We welcome your inquiries, and will deliver more information about the link between autism and SSRIs like Paxil and Zoloft as it becomes available.

FDA investigating link between increased blood clot risk and cat

FDA investigating link between increased blood clot risk and cat

The U.S. food and Drug Administration (FDA) leads a study on the risks of blood clots related to use of Yasmin and BEYAZ birth control pills.

These pills contain a combination of drospirenone called. Other birth control pills contain a compound called levonorgestrel.

The warning before a week by the FDA for the consumers released provides information to women, which called the pills Yasmin, cat or BEYAZ. The studies show that women who take the pills with drospirenone develop time more probable thrombosis as the women 2-3 using the pills, the levonorgestrel.

Women who develop the blood clot can occur persistent leg pain, severe chest pain or sudden shortness of breath. Some women who have already brought an action against the company were suffering from strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis or other types of blood clots.

The relationship between speed and serious accidents in Georgia

The relationship between speed and serious accidents in Georgia

There are more than six million accidents in the United States each year that more than three million people killed result in injuries and a further 40,000. Driver, alcohol include the variety of factors that can contribute to serious car accidents inattentive impairment and practices driving a multitude of other less secure. Speed is however probably the single most dangerous driving practice. While it may surprise many to know that excessive speed that number and heavy from auto accidents increases most would be surprised to know that extreme differences between car drivers also significantly increase the risk on a roadway.

In fact, this means that driving slowly increases the danger for drivers, in particular where a significant number of drivers to move at a high rate of speed. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), acceleration is a contributing factor in 31% of all fatal car crashes or more than 12,000 acceleration deaths per year. These accidents also exact a significant economic toll on company accounting for 28 billion US $ in lost resources.

The relationship between excessive speed and car accidents associated with basic limitations of human response to stimuli. It takes a person between 15 and. 3 seconds after we see a threat to respond. When a vehicle with a speed of 30 mph, the car driving 9 feet in the time that a driver seeing a threat and mentally process the data so that the driver can then start braking. At sixty miles per hour, the same vehicle would 20 foot travel before the driver recognizes that he or she has the brakes.

Ironically, people the same general disapproval to acceleration feel not, that they are similar effects on the not in direction of drunkenness, despite the fact that both practices have. In fact, a survey of the driver showed that ninety percent of all drivers to speed up a point, and grant 75% of the drivers, that they the speed limit on a regular basis against. Most people have not these assigned same indifference to the dangers of drunkenness, as a study showed that half of all Americans believe that drunk driving laws go not far enough in terms of sanctions. Unfortunately drunken drivers and speeders make similar risks to the likelihood of a serious car accident caused. Both behaviors slow response times on how long a driver has to perform evasive maneuver or apply the brakes. The amount of time a driver the brakes to apply increases exponentially with increasing speed. Although it is done to stop 100 feet of the forty miles per hour, it is four times that long to stop at 80 miles per hour. An Australian study, the brakes times between drunken drivers and riders who are accelerating compared found that acceleration had affected more effect on stopping distance than alcohol.

Acceleration causes serious injury and higher fatality rates. Higher speed means the force of the collision is greater, and he takes the vehicle much more impact. Greater impact means a higher likelihood of catastrophic injuries including traumatic brain injury, may impact on the physical and mental debilitating spinal cord injuries, internal organ damage and other types of injuries, the permanent work.

While most people recognize the danger of the extremely high rates of speed, there are other speed factors that accidents contribute to many Georgia car. Some roads are dangerous, even when a driver operates a vehicle at a lower rate of speed. The posted speed on road surfaces, the narrow, winding, hilly or otherwise treacherous are may be much lower than highway speeds. The speed limit in this way of the road even five miles by more than the maximum speed may increase an hour of clear risk, involved in a serious car accident. Roads can be drawn poorly, so that there are large variations in the speed between vehicles on the road. Differential extreme speed between vehicles can be as dangerous as high speeds. In fact, data from a study found that the fastest and slowest 5 percent of all drivers have an increased risk of accidents on the other 90 percent of the drivers. These streets are even more dangerous when they are wet or icy from adverse weather conditions.
