New California Child Seat Safety Law Raises Age Requirement
AppId is over the quota

A couple weeks after National Child Passenger Safety Week, California passed an important child seat law that will make children across the state safer by raising the age and size required for a child to ride without a booster seat. The law, which was sponsored by state senator Noreen Evans and passed into law by Governor Brown on October 4th, will require all children under eight years old or shorter than 4’9’’ (whichever comes first) to use a safety chair.
The intent of the law is to ensure that safety belts will fit across children’s chests, rather than higher and closer to the neck. Federal groups like the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, National Transportation Safety Board and the American Academy of Pediatrics have been advocating for such regulations for years.
In fact, thirty states already have similar requirements.
California was once the leader in child seat safety laws. Back in 2000, the state passed the strictest child passenger safety laws in the country. But under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, education on proper safety seat use became the focus rather than passing more and tougher laws.
Perhaps governor Schwarzenegger was overcome by the ever-powerful first grader lobby. Children look forward to getting into adult seats, and likely would oppose any regulation that keeps them strapped into a special seat any longer than absolutely necessary.
Hopefully, with this law in hand, parents can avoid an argument or fuss.
While this adjustment will probably be fairly seamless for families with kids currently under six years old, it seems unlikely that the new regulations will cause all parents of seven year olds to go out and buy car seats for the year. Of course, the cost of picking up a new car seat is well worth dramatically improving a child’s safety.
This law will certainly do some good, but regulation alone is not enough. Even though previous California administrations failed to keep up with the best child safety seat laws, the message that it’s nearly as important for parents to keep up with best practices for using the seats remains spot on.
A study by Safe Kids USA showed that although almost all parents used child safety seats, only 28 percent of parents were properly using them. So although the news here is that kids need to stay in safety seats until their a bit older, it’s a good opportunity to remind everyone that there are free resources out there to help you make sure you are fastening your child into his or her seat properly.
Just click over to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration for a list of locations near you. Here is a map the California locations where you can get a brief tutorial on child seat safety best practices.

Every Parent's Nightmare--You leave you child for a sleepover and she dies
AppId is over the quota
Here is one of the saddest cases I've come across in a long time.
Parents left their 14 year old daughter with another parent for a sleepover. The host parent promised to supervise and enforce the rule that "my daughter is not to be driven by any young male drivers. This is the rule we have at home."
The promise was made, then broken.
You can read this very sad car accident case from the Supreme Court of Virginia here.

Mother and Child Killed in Tragic Accident
AppId is over the quota
On September 28, a mother and her eight-year-old daughter were killed in an auto accident in Franklin Township near the intersection of Route 27 and Van Dyke Road. Niesha Middleton was traveling south on Route 27 with her two children when her Toyota entered the northbound lane and was struck by a Chrysler minivan taxi.
The accident happened as Middleton passed the vehicle in front of her. As she re-entered the right southbound lane, she lost control of the vehicle. After impacting a curb and blowing out a tire, her vehicle entered the northbound lanes, where it crashed.
Middleton, her daughter and her seven-year-old son suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, and were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The driver of the taxi and its single passenger suffered a leg injury and an arm injury, respectively, and were transported to the same facility.
Middleton died of head and neck injuries on Thursday morning. Her daughter died on Wednesday evening. Her son’s condition is unknown. The taxi’s occupants are expected to make a full recovery.
Our deepest sympathy goes out Ms. Middleton’s family in the wake of their loss, and we wish her son, the taxi driver and the taxi’s passenger a speedy recovery.
The Danger of Everyday Driving
The accident that killed Ms. Middleton and her daughter illustrates some of the dangers of everyday driving. Things such as overcompensating during a turn or going too fast given road conditions may seem risky at worst, but in fact they can be fatal. This is why safety experts reiterate driving safety tips that may seem elementary. They’re anything but that.
Each year, car accidents kill over 40,000 people on U.S. roadways and injure 2 million. To avoid contributing to these statistics, drivers should learn which maneuvers and everyday road situations pose the most danger and then modify their driving habits accordingly. And if they are injured by the carelessness of another, drivers should contact a New Jersey accident attorney at Console & Hollawell, because a good attorney can help them secure the remuneration they’re entitled to.

Is your child seat safe? Get it inspected for National Child Passenger Safety Week
AppId is over the quota

This week is National Child Passenger Safety Week, which serves as a reminder that while we’re getting better about buckling up our kids in the backseat, motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death for children between ages of 3 and 14.
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) is using this week to promote child safety education for parents. A new study from Safe Kids USA indicates that while almost all parents are restraining car seats in the backseat, only 28 percent of drivers who carry young passengers are properly using the tethers that secure child seats in collisions. Often the inspected tethers were secured too lowly or not at all. The tethers are a vital safety measure because they keep children’s heads from moving too much during crashes.
The study also raised concern that many parents are not aware of the latest best safety practices for children of different heights and weights. For instance, in 2010 the American Academy of Pediatrics updated their guidelines to recommend that children under two ride in rear-facing seats. However a recent poll showed that only 27 percent of parents had received that message. Almost three quarters of parents reported turning their kids around before year two, and 30 percent before year one.
The results are somewhat alarming considering that, according to the NHTSA, properly used child safety seats decrease the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Even older children are 59 percent less likely to be injured in a booster seat than if they were using seat belts only.
To help educate the local Contra Costa County community, the firefighters from Local 1230 are ramping up their driver education services. The Fire District now has seven nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who can inspect cars and educate parents and caregivers on the best practices for child passenger safety seats.
The Fire District says that inspections last between a half hour and an hour, depending on the seat and whether any issues are found. These inspections are a convenient and free way for parents and caregivers to make sure that they are using the seat correctly, and that the seat itself has not been recalled. In addition to the inspection, the safety technicians will educate parents on the latest in child passenger safety, and go through the proper way to install child seats.
To take advantage of this Contra Costa Fire Protection District service, call them at (925) 941-3326 or send an email to childcarseat@cccfpd.org.
Nationwide safety inspections
You don’t have to live in Contra Costa County to meet with someone to inspect the safety of your child seat! This Saturday, September 24th, is National Seat Check Saturday. For the finale of Child Passenger Safety Week, certified child safety seat technicians will be on hand at locations around the country to inspect cars and assist with correct installation.
Just head to the NHTSA website and plug in your zip code for a list of locations near you! It’s a great opportunity to get the information that could save the life of a child you love.

Seattle personal injury attorney | Father and child taken during the crossing Street
It is always sad to hear about a pedestrian is hit by a car in Seattle, but for the first time for months the driver currently held, to ensure that the person he was taken in order. As Seattle pedestrian accident injury lawyer I know that this summer was Washington numerous hit and-run accident, pedestrians cyclists who seriously injured and and dead in some tragic cases.
Last night a man and his child were injured critically when they were hit, tried, 15th Street cross Broadway. Police have stopped fault for the accident, but luckily the driver not clear yet who was so that he could question, what happened. The pedestrians, whose Name has not yet been released, carried his child across the street at 11: 30 at night, when they were struck by an oncoming vehicle. The father broke most of autumn for the child who suffered only, heavy head persistent small bruises, but the father and leg injuries and rushed to Harborview Medical Center had to be. A taxi driver on finished the scene, just a few minutes after the accident, when he saw the man on the ground are located and the child screaming next to his father.
Regardless of who's fault this tragic accident it is liable to pedestrians and drivers if you out on the street; especially late at night. Although pedestrians have the right-of-way in many cases it is necessary to exercise a high degree of caution, if you try to cross the street. Seattle lawyer my thoughts go as personal injury, going man and child who were injured, but also as the driver so no one with the intention of the collision with pedestrians. We all need to be more careful when we are likely to take the city streets, pedestrians and bicyclists have.

Seattle of personal injury lawyer | Mother and child kills distracted driving
For those of you who think that your SMS and driving can, that you will cause an accident not good enough are, you are wrong. As Seattle personal injury I know that it is impossible, go full focus is lawyer, while you read or send a text message. Distraction by nothing, like the radio or on make-up, can dramatically increase your chances in an accident and life changing injury to themselves and other causes.
Last Thursday night, killed 18-year-old Randreaita Coleman, herself and her 10-month-old son as she lost control of her vehicle, when you try to send a text message. Coleman was reducing Interstate 65 in Alabama, when she crossed over the center line and crashed head-on into a dump trucks Peterbilt. 45 Year-old Robert Paulk, the driver of the dump truck, suffered light injuries and was transported to a local hospital, but Randreaita was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son, Carter, was barely alive when officers arrived on the scene and became a field hospital where doctor tirelessly but to strictly his injuries which to revive him, and they were not in a position to bring him to life.
Distracted to drive is an epidemic of the country and takes hundreds of lives every year, but hear and see so many people die not seems to be enough to stop people, with their phones while they drive. As a Seattle car accident lawyer think I, that it time to make the penalty for cell phone use while driving to significantly increase and it should be illegal everywhere, not only in certain States. Drivers need to understand, that she endanger far too many lives you are their phone and SMS if they pull while driving.
