Pedestrian safety: Amtrak train accident in Southern California kills three men walking along tracks
AppId is over the quota
Three pedestrians were killed on Monday, Dec. 13 when they were struck by an Amtrak train headed from San Diego to Los Angeles, according to KTLA News in Los Angeles. Thought to be possible taggers, the men in their early- to mid-20s were walking along the train tracks over Telegraph Road when the Amtrak train struck the pedestrians.
The conductor of the train tried to avert the pedestrian accident but could not apply the train’s brakes in time, causing a fatal collision with the men. LA County fire department and LA Sheriff Homicide detectives arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and pronounced the men dead.
A train accident is rare. Most often, pedestrian injuries occur on the road involving vehicles, and the risk of a pedestrian accident is higher than once thought: a pedestrian is killed every 120 seconds according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Pedestrian accidents generally occur because:
A driver has failed to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian at a crosswalk. Generally, a pedestrian has the right-of-way for crossing the street, walking in a parking lot and on sidewalks. When a driver fails to give you the right-of-way, and if you’re injured as a result, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.Hit-and-run accidents. A hit-and-run car accident can frequently involve pedestrians. Try to gather license plate information if you can.A driver not making a complete stop. If a driver is not paying attention and fails to make a complete stop, s/he may not be able to see you on the road and can collide with you. In the case of the Amtrak train, even though the conductor was aware of the men traveling the tracks, he was unable to make a complete stop in time. This can often happen on the road as well.Pedestrian safety is often overlooked as a possible public hazard. But unfortunately, accidents like these can happen anytime, but there are ways to avoid being hit as a pedestrian on the street.
To stay on the safer side of pedestrian travel, try to:
Wear white or bright clothing when walking. If you’re pro-pedestrian, then consider wearing brighter clothing so drivers can see you on the road.Use reflective vests. Bicyclists will find this tip extra useful because reflective gear can greatly increase your visibility, especially as oncoming headlights approach you. Cars can see you much more quickly using reflective gear versus dark, inhibitive clothing.Don’t J-Walk. Even if you think it’s safe, do not cross the road without using a crosswalk and following pedestrian safety rules. You never know when a car will take a turn out of nowhere and hit you.Don’t travel along railroad tracks. Even if you think you’re quick enough to get out of the way of a train’s path, don’t linger around or walk alongside train tracks. While this seems like an obvious tip, there are many travelers who use train tracks for longer distances since train tracks offer a more direct route without having to use street travel. Like the pedestrians killed in the Amtrak accident, it’s safer to simply stay on the sidewalk versus any alternative travel via train tracks.Don’t walk at night. As seen in a previous blog post involving a pedestrian accident in San Marcos, it’s never completely safe to walk at night, especially on busy areas near freeways and on-ramps. Avoid pedestrian activities at dusk and night hours. If you have been injured as a pedestrian, attorneys at the Law Offices of Michael Pines, APC, can help evaluate your case. Three of the victims of yesterday’s fatal car wreck in Arlington have been identified as twin brothers Michael and Stephen Eckles, 21 (one of whom was driving), and Danielle Ruthstrom, 19. It is believed all three attended Seguin High School in Arlington. Two other victims who are still in critical condition at JPS Hospital in Fort Worth have not yet been publically identified.
Police still do not know what exactly caused the car in which the group was riding to go off the road and crash into a tree, splitting it in half before becoming engulfed in flames. There was speculation that alcohol was a factor as a liquor bottle was found at the accident scene, although a close friend of the Eckles brothers whose home they had left just prior to the collision reported that he noticed nothing unusual about either of them.
The deadly accident happened at approximately 3:00 am yesterday morning at the intersection of Southeast Green Oaks Boulevard and Yaupon Drive, close to Ferguson Junior High School.
I wish to offer my most heartfelt condolences to the families of Michael, Stephen and Danielle. I cannot even imagine the grief you must be experiencing right now. What happened with a tragedy. Three Dead, Two Injured in Early-Morning Arlington Wreck

It’s only Monday morning, and already a disastrous single-car accident which occurred in Arlington in the early hours has cost three people their lives and left another two hospitalized in critical condition. At approximately 3:00am this morning, an Arlington patrol officer witnessed a flash of light on Southeast Green Oaks Boulevard between Cravens Park Drive and Yaupon Drive. A Honda Accord carrying four passengers in addition to the driver crashed into a tree. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.
According to the police, the driver and a passenger identified as his brother were pronounced deceased at the wreck scene. A third person, a female, died shortly thereafter at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Another two individuals, both passengers in the car, remain in critical condition and are being treated for serious injuries. No names of the accident victims have been released, although police have confirmed the ages of all five individuals range from 17 to 21.
At this stage, a police investigation has not determined what caused the driver of the Honda to lose control, although it is believed that speeding was a factor. Given the rain we’ve had over the weekend after a month-long drought, the roads around DFW are particularly slippery right now, causing hazards for all motorists. Police also reported that a liquor bottle was recovered from the destroyed vehicle, and have noted that alcohol could possibly have been a factor although they cannot confirm whether the driver had indeed been drinking.
Regardless of the causes of this crash, the fact that it is a tragedy is undeniable. I would like to offer my most sincere and heartfelt sympathies to the families and loved ones of those whose lives were lost in the accident. I am very sorry for your loss. I would also like to offer my thoughts and hopes for a full recovery to those who remain under the doctors’ care.

Three feet passed law accidents can reduce bicycle.

Last year I wrote a post for this blog titled "California Lawmkers get serious bike security." At the time L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced his support for a California bicycle helmet law, and City Council of the city took steps to approve legislation to allow motorists to 3 feet, while the cyclists passed. This month, which must be California legislature an opportunity to join 18 other States in the implementation of a 3-foot passing law, that dramatically passed the number of accidents, the number one cause of death in adult cyclists in California and across the country would be reduced.
On 27 June, the California Assembly consider Transport Committee under the chairmanship of Senator Bonnie Lowenthal, law 3-foot pass. GJEL recognizes that the passing distance could save lives, and today one of the support Senator Lowenthal letter. The new law would transfer the benefit of the Californians more comfortable getting on their bikes, public health and the environment could improve. You can, send your own letter of support.
California law currently requires that drivers allow a cyclist passed "safe distance", but does not clarify what that means, while the California driver Handbook suggests three feet. SB-910, sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition of California and the city of Los Angeles, this proposal would make right and would also legalize, cross a double yellow line to a cyclist passed with enough space. Injured in an accident, a driver would hand over a $220-based good bear (which would reach almost $1,000 after court fees).
Passing a cyclist closer than 3 foot "to avoid the slightest error by the driver or a slight shift of the cyclist, dirt or rough pavement can lead to a collision", says the Bicycle Coalition of California. "These are not the most common type of car-bike collision, but they are the most deadly: delivery-from behind collisions are the leading cause of cyclists deaths in California."
