Woman Killed When Tree Falls on Car in Costa Mesa

September 15, 2011 - According to reports a woman was killed when a tree fell on her car in Costa Mesa. According to Costa Mesa Police Lt. Mark Manley, police received a report of a tree hitting a car, Thursday at approximately 2:00 p.m. and rescuers responded to the intersection of Irvine Avenue and 17th Street.
The initial reports, according to Lt. Manley were that a car had hit a tree.
Responders and Costa Mesa police found the 2002 Huyndai damaged by an approximately 50 foot eucalyptus tree that had fallen on the car in the left turn lane of the street. The tree crushed the Huyndai killing the driver, who a helicopter had been called for to transport her to the hospital.
Costa Mesa police said, the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, prior to the helicopter arriving. The police said the woman, whose identity has not been released; pending notification of her next of kin was the only occupant in the 2002 Hyundai, when the tree crushed the vehicle, killing the woman.
